AAA Campaign: It’s a Captain’s Call: Re-instate Lisa Singh as the # 3 on the Senate pre-selection ticket

Also, it is another setback for better quality multicultural representation, winding the clock back twenty years and making the bamboo ceiling all the more difficult to break. You would expect the ALP being the organic heartland for equality and fairness to uphold these values and review their pre-selection processes which are steeped in factional, back door deals and promises of power.

The Asian Australian Alliance has started a campaign for Tasmania Labor to re-in state Senator Lisa Singh as the number three candidate on the Senate pre-selection ticket. A change.org petition calling for Bill Shorten to intervene and make the right decision has been launched today. The petition can be found at:  (https://www.change.org/p/bill-shorten-mark-butler-alp-national-executive-tasmania-labor-executive-it-s-a-captain-s-call-re-instate-lisa-singh-as-the-3-on-the-senate-pre-selection-ticket?recruiter=399616432&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=copylink)

In a deal done behind closed doors by the left factions of Tasmania Labor, John Short- Secretary for the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU) in Tasmania has been parachuted to replace Lisa Singh, making her the unwinnable number four candidate and him the number three. As no Federal Election has been called yet, it is not too late to reverse the decision, considering Lisa still has two years left to serve in her current Senate term.

There has been outcries from the multicultural communities, demanding action and seeking reasons why a popular Tasmanian Senator has been demoted. So far, these concerns have fallen on death ears, with no response from Bill Shorten or the ALP National Executive. Stuart Benson, Vice President for Tasmania Labor has responded by defending this decision and claiming the pre-selection process is transparent. In a rebuttal written for the Labor Herald he states:

Whilst a handful of members may be unhappy with the result, rather than blaming a process (which contains around a 75 per cent rank and file vote through a postal ballot) people should look at their own failings. (Source: https://thelab.laborherald.com.au/party-on/tasmania-leads-the-way-on-party-reform/)

From this, it is clear that to campaign for Lisa’s re-in statement is more than just her sharing an Asian Australian heritage, but more so about her popularity, experience, achievements and her high level of community engagement and advocacy.

This is interesting, considering the achievements, successes and contributions which Lisa Singh has made in her political career has come down to a postal ballot.

And in following a SBS article written by Asian Australian Alliance (AAA), questions were raised about the ALP’s pre-selection processes and highlighting Lisa Singh’s track record and career achievements. From this, it is clear that to campaign for Lisa’s re-instatement is more than just her sharing an Asian Australian heritage, but more so about her popularity, experience, achievements and her high level of community engagement and advocacy. Asides from upholding a factional promise, there is no other reason why Lisa has been relegated.
